WEA Paul Petzoldt Leadership Award Winner 1989

 

Bjorn Kjellstrom, originally from Sweden, was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, experienced wilderness traveler, and cross-country skier.  He was a Swedish champion in Orienteering and co-founder of the compass manufacturing company Silva Sweden AB.  He was one of the founders of the Swedish Orienteering Federation, the first of its kind in the world, and also of the U.S. Orienteering Federation.  In 1946 he moved to the United States, where he founded the U.S. operations of The Silva Company (later Silva, Inc.).   He also served asvice president of the International Ski Federation from 1951 to 1979.
